ANALYSIS: SMU is among the very best of the best in NCAA hoops this year. They are ranked #9 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 30-5. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 11) in the AAC (average ranking 119.7).
SMU will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 118 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and embracing a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 18th-slowest pace in D1), the squad is rated #7 in offensive efficiency. SMU is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 42.7% of their three-pointers (second in the nation), 40.4% of their mid-range chances (27th), and 49.4% of their total shots from the field (16th) vs. AO. SMU also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 16th nationally), and with a rating of 16.87, they're 49th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. SMU lastly does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.78 vs. AO, they are ranked 19th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 69.5%.
SMU plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 20th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. SMU is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.09 vs. AO, they are currently rated second in the country in that category. SMU will also take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They'll inflict the most harm on the outside, allowing AO to convert just 31.7% of their three-pointers (30th in the nation), 29.9% of their mid-range chances (third), and 38.3% of their total shots from the field (sixth). If SMU does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.03 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 26th-worst in college basketball.
SMU has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #48 ranking in positive momentum. On the road, SMU performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked ninth from the bottom in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
SMU is typically worse vs. teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. Against foes that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.17%, SMU performs above their norm 18% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 63% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, SMU often performs worse than normal. SMU is more efficient than usual 20% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.15%. In their other contests, SMU performs better than the norm 60% of the time.
SMU does worse vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 97.79, SMU performs above average 32% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 69% of the time.
