ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Samford should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. They have a record of 17-16 and are ranked 166th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Southern (average ranking 190.4), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Samford this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 165th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 104 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Samford has been fairly decent in preventing teams from draining shots from between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 57th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.2% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (29.3%) will be from mid-range.
Samford is not quite as good on the offensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 186th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 102 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Samford has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.86, which ranks 314th in D1.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Samford is typically better vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.97, Samford performs above their norm 63% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 25% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Samford often performs better than normal. Samford is more efficient than usual 55% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.97%. In their other contests, Samford performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
