ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Sam Houston is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Haslametrics has them ranked 218th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 18-13. Of the 13 schools in the Southland (average ranking 253.4), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Though their defense is far from abysmal, Sam Houston is not really proficient on that end of the court either. Allowing about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they are ranked #242 in defensive efficiency. Sam Houston fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 31.62 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #335 in the country in that category. If Sam Houston does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 76.48 vs. AO, which ranks 20th-best in college basketball.
Sam Houston doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 97 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #216 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Sam Houston is not one of the better teams at drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 22.41 vs. AO, they are 295th in the overall rankings for that category.
Sam Houston has been playing some of their worst basketball of the season as of late, and they're presently ranked fourth from the bottom in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
