ANALYSIS: Portland is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Carrying a record of 7-25, they are currently rated #316 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the WCC (average ranking 126.0).
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Portland. The team is ranked 315th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Portland does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.3% of all second-chance opportunities (third from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 10.84, they're 314th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. Portland also happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 334th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 78.58 vs. AO.
Portland doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #294 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Portland allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 330th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.44 vs. AO.
Portland is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 42nd in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. On the road, Portland performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 41st in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Portland performs worse against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.81, Portland is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 67% of the time.
