ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Vanderbilt has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They are ranked #76 (out of 363) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 22-15. Of the 14 schools in the SEC (average ranking 78.8), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Vanderbilt this year is offense. The team is ranked 39th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 111 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Vanderbilt is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 13th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 89.35 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 44.4% of them vs. AO. Vanderbilt has also established itself as a team that cleans the offensive glass quite well. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 17.55 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 30th in the NCAA).
Vanderbilt is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 126th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Vanderbilt has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 49th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.2% of their attempts from afar. Vanderbilt has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 62nd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.4% of their attempts from close-up. If Vanderbilt does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.07 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 43rd-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Vanderbilt is typically worse vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.29, Vanderbilt performs above their norm 27% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 68% of the time.
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Vanderbilt often performs better than normal. Vanderbilt is more efficient than usual 77% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 62.04%. In their other contests, Vanderbilt performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
Vanderbilt does better vs. clubs that prefer the outside shot. When playing squads that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.97, Vanderbilt performs above average 64% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
