ANALYSIS: Oregon is a top-25 caliber squad that should be able to remain competitive with most, if not all, teams in the country. Their record this season is 25-13, and the club is ranked 24th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 107.2).
Favoring a style of play that will try to grind things to a crawl (the eighth-slowest pace in D1), Oregon has been a force on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 16th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oregon does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked first in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.50, they're 37th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Oregon will also take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They allow AO to convert only 28.0% of their three-pointers (second in the nation), 53.3% of their near-proximity attempts (30th), and 38.1% of their total shots from the field (ninth).
Oregon plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 48th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oregon has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 34th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.00 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-75 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 46.2% of their total attempts vs. AO. Oregon also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.61, which ranks #43 in the country.
Oregon has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked first in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, Oregon often performs better than normal. Oregon is more efficient than usual 75% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02. In their other contests, Oregon performs better than the norm 28% of the time.
Oregon does worse vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.57, Oregon performs above average 23% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 68% of the time.
Oregon performs worse against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.76%, Oregon is more efficient than normal 29% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 67% of the time.
