ANALYSIS: N. Illinois is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Carrying a record of 6-25, they are currently rated #344 overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the MAC (average ranking 226.5), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
N. Illinois has a very tough time coming by points on offense. Scoring about 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are woefully ranked #352 in offensive efficiency. N. Illinois shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 30.0% of their mid-range jumpers (seventh from the bottom in the nation), 52.6% of their near-proximity chances (349th), and 38.0% of their total shots from the field (fourth from the bottom) vs. AO. N. Illinois also does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.1% of all second-chance opportunities (fifth from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 9.28, they're eighth from the bottom in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, N. Illinois still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 114 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #288 in the nation in defensive efficiency. N. Illinois fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 34.20 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #360 in the country in that category. N. Illinois also does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 341st nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.7% of their attempts from afar. If N. Illinois does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 83.42 vs. AO, which ranks 37th-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, N. Illinois usually performs better than average. N. Illinois is more efficient than normal 81% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.82. In all other contests, N. Illinois performs better than average 33% of the time.
N. Illinois is typically better vs. teams that tend to get off more shots. Against foes that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 87.03, N. Illinois performs above their norm 85% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 40% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, N. Illinois often performs better than normal. N. Illinois is more efficient than usual 89% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.86%. In their other contests, N. Illinois performs better than the norm 47% of the time.
