ANALYSIS: N. Colorado is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. They are ranked #269 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 14-15. Of the 12 schools in the Big Sky (average ranking 242.4), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
N. Colorado has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #97 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. N. Colorado is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 25th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.09 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 43.8% of them vs. AO. N. Colorado also does an adequate job of creating chances for themselves off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 17.43 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 58th in the NCAA). If N. Colorado does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 65.1% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 50th-worst in Division I.
Sadly for N. Colorado, the drop-off from offensive efficiency to defensive efficiency is massive. The team is ranked fourth from the bottom in defensive efficiency, allowing about 115 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. N. Colorado allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 38.0% of their three-pointers (329th in the nation), 67.8% of their near-proximity attempts (sixth from the bottom), and 48.1% of their total shots from the field (331st).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
N. Colorado performs worse against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.70, N. Colorado is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 72% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, N. Colorado usually performs worse than average. N. Colorado is more efficient than normal 40% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.68%. In all other contests, N. Colorado performs better than average 77% of the time.
N. Colorado is typically worse vs. teams that shoot the ball well from the field. Against foes that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.14%, N. Colorado performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 68% of the time.
