ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, North Florida should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 21-12, and the club is ranked 164th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of nine) in the Atlantic Sun (average ranking 246.9).
North Florida succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 38th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Florida lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks second in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. And they'll absolutely kill you if you let them shoot from behind the arc. The squad makes 37.8% of its attempts from long-distance vs. AO, 15th-best in the nation. North Florida also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 75.7% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 40th nationally in free throw percentage.
Sadly for North Florida, the drop-off from offensive efficiency to defensive efficiency is massive. The team is ranked 320th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 108 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Florida allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked fifth from the bottom in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.42 vs. AO. North Florida also performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 335th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 43.0% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Making matters worse, AO will take advantage of that weakness and put up mid-range shots in abundance. Of AO's total field goals, a huge portion of them (36.7%) will be from those in-between locations.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
North Florida is typically worse vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.12%, North Florida performs above their norm 38% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 90% of the time.
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, North Florida often performs worse than normal. North Florida is more efficient than usual 31% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.00%. In their other contests, North Florida performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
North Florida does worse vs. clubs that shoot the ball well from the field. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.26%, North Florida performs above average 41% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 89% of the time.
