ANALYSIS: A borderline top-25 caliber team, Memphis will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. Their record this season is 22-11, and the club is ranked 27th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 11 schools in the AAC (average ranking 106.2), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Memphis is defense. The team is ranked 32nd in efficiency, allowing fewer than 93 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Memphis thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 12th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 15.27. Memphis will also take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 33.9% of their mid-range jumpers (35th in the nation), 52.9% of their near-proximity chances (26th), and 39.0% of their total shots from the field (24th).
Memphis plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 38th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 110 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Memphis does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 8.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked fourth nationally), and with a rating of 18.71, they're eighth in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Memphis also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 30.24 vs. AO, they are ranked ninth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 70.8%. Memphis is lastly one of the best field goal shooting teams that opposing defenses will have the displeasure of facing this season. The squad is ranked 16th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 48.2% of their attempts vs. AO. If Memphis does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 12.86 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 32nd-worst in the college game.
Memphis has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #42 ranking in positive momentum. Memphis has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 342nd overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Memphis performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 327th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Memphis often performs better than normal. Memphis is more efficient than usual 72% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.52. In their other contests, Memphis performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
Memphis does better vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.19%, Memphis performs above average 72% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
Memphis performs worse against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.24%, Memphis is more efficient than normal 20% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 65% of the time.
