ANALYSIS: Memphis has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. They have a record of 21-10 and are ranked 64th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 12 schools in the AAC (average ranking 94.4), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
The Memphis defense will be extremely problematic for most opposing offenses. Allowing about 86 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the club is ranked fifth overall in defensive efficiency. Memphis will do a number on many an opponent's shooting percentage, as the team ranks in the top-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal categories. They allow AO to convert only 29.2% of their three-pointers (ninth in the nation), 46.1% of their near-proximity attempts (first), and 36.4% of their total shots from the field (second). Memphis also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 22nd in the NCAA).
Unfortunately, Memphis is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 203rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Memphis is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 339th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 31.8% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. If Memphis does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to obtain and convert second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of 7.4% vs. AO, which ranks 17th in the nation.
Memphis has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 312th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. On the road, Memphis performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 329th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Memphis performs worse against squads that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, Memphis is more efficient than normal 29% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 100% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Memphis usually performs better than average. Memphis is more efficient than normal 90% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.22. In all other contests, Memphis performs better than average 33% of the time.
Memphis is typically worse vs. teams that prefer the outside shot. Against foes that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.98, Memphis performs above their norm 31% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 73% of the time.
