ANALYSIS: Memphis is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. Ranked 65th overall (out of 364) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 29-6. Of the 13 schools in the AAC (average ranking 159.4), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Memphis will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 56th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Memphis does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 33rd in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 15.70. Memphis has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #56 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.9% of their total attempts from the floor.
Memphis plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 78th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 114 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Memphis does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked third nationally), and with a rating of 19.41, they're 20th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Memphis also does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 31.95 vs. AO, they are ranked 38th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 69.0% of their attempts.
Memphis is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 33rd in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
