ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, NC A&T likely fits the bill. They have a record of 9-23 and are ranked 334th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #10 team (out of 13) in the MEAC (average ranking 280.5).
NC A&T is not one of the most productive teams on offense. Scoring fewer than 90 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are rated at #326 in offensive efficiency. NC A&T struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 29.5% of their three-pointers (333rd in the nation), 52.9% of their near-proximity attempts (311th), and 39.4% of their total shots from the field (311th) vs. AO.
NC A&T doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 109 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #319 in the nation in defensive efficiency. NC A&T does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 330th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.1% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (38.9%) will be from long-distance. NC A&T also does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #308 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 8.85 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that tend to get off more shots, NC A&T usually performs worse than average. NC A&T is more efficient than normal 25% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.84. In all other contests, NC A&T performs better than average 72% of the time.
NC A&T is typically worse vs. teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively. Against foes that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 104.06, NC A&T performs above their norm 25% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 72% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, NC A&T often performs worse than normal. NC A&T is more efficient than usual 40% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.84. In their other contests, NC A&T performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
