ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Nevada likely fits the bill. Ranked 283rd overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 9-22. They are also ranked by this site as the #10 team (out of 11) in the MWC (average ranking 148.5).
Nevada is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #289 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 94 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Nevada struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when shooting outside the paint, converting just 27.9% of their three-pointers (fifth from the bottom in the nation), 31.9% of their mid-range chances (306th), and 39.1% of their total shots from the field (315th) vs. AO. If Nevada does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 21.88 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks sixth in all of college hoops.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Nevada still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #215 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Nevada gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 19.98 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (fifth from the bottom nationally). Nevada also struggles on occasion to deny opponents opportunities to shoot from the floor. The team is ranked 303rd in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.16 vs. AO.
Nevada has been playing some of their worst basketball of the season as of late, and they're presently ranked 331st in positive momentum because of it. When playing on the road, Nevada performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 321st in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Nevada does better vs. clubs that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 9.97, Nevada performs above average 70% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 11% of the time.
Nevada performs worse against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 64.17, Nevada is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 82% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter, Nevada usually performs better than average. Nevada is more efficient than normal 80% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.01. In all other contests, Nevada performs better than average 37% of the time.
