ANALYSIS: UNLV has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. Ranked 188th overall (out of 357) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 12-15. They are also ranked by this site as the #6 team (out of 11) in the MWC (average ranking 178.7).
Based on the data, UNLV will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 100 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #164 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. UNLV has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 38th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.79 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 43.7% of them vs. AO. UNLV also does an adequate job of creating chances for themselves off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 15.83 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 51st in the NCAA). If UNLV does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of only 19.63 vs. AO, which ranks 14th-worst in the country.
UNLV doesn't perform as well defensively as they do offensively. The team is ranked 246th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UNLV does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 347th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.5% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (41.7%) will be from long-distance.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, UNLV often performs better than normal. UNLV is more efficient than usual 75% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.64%. In their other contests, UNLV performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
UNLV does better vs. clubs that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When playing squads that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.85%, UNLV performs above average 69% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
UNLV performs worse against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.63, UNLV is more efficient than normal 29% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
