ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, UNLV is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 86th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 17-15. Of the 11 schools in the MWC (average ranking 131.7), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
The primary strength for UNLV this year is offense. The team is ranked 64th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 105 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UNLV is one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 26th nationally), and with a rating of 16.41, they're 31st in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. UNLV will also make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 48th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 58.0% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category.
UNLV is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 117th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 97 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UNLV has been doing fairly decent work to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 70th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 79.12 vs. AO.
UNLV has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked second in positive momentum. When playing on the road, UNLV performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 320th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UNLV does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.58, UNLV performs above average 18% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 62% of the time.
UNLV performs better against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.57, UNLV is more efficient than normal 63% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 23% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, UNLV usually performs better than average. UNLV is more efficient than normal 59% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 8.79. In all other contests, UNLV performs better than average 20% of the time.
