ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Omaha should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. They have a record of 18-14 and are ranked 131st overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of nine) in the Summit League (average ranking 169.2).
While favoring one of the game's most blistering paces (the fifth-fastest in D1), the primary strength for Omaha this year is offense. The team is ranked 84th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 106 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Omaha does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 75.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 30th nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-100 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 30.74 vs. AO. Omaha will also make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 36th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-50 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 64.6% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO.
Unfortunately, Omaha is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 266th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Omaha performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 332nd nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 40.9% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. If Omaha does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 17.14 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks second-best in college basketball.
Omaha has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 304th in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that convert well from the charity stripe, Omaha usually performs worse than average. Omaha is more efficient than normal 26% of the time when facing clubs that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 70.32%. In all other contests, Omaha performs better than average 73% of the time.
Omaha is typically worse vs. teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. Against foes that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.54, Omaha performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 67% of the time.
When facing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Omaha often performs better than normal. Omaha is more efficient than usual 67% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 105.25. In their other contests, Omaha performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
