ANALYSIS: South Dakota has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. They have a record of 19-14 and are ranked 248th overall (out of 364) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the nine schools in the Summit League (average ranking 207.3), they're currently ranked as our #6 team in the conference.
With one of the game's most blistering paces (the second-fastest in D1), South Dakota will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 167th in offensive efficiency and scores more than 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. South Dakota does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 35.41 vs. AO, they are ranked fourth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 71.8%. If South Dakota does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's ability (or lack thereof) to sink threes. The squad converts just 30.8% of their three-point attempts vs. AO, which ranks 41st-worst in the nation.
Unfortunately, South Dakota is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 325th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 116 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. South Dakota is one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 7.7% of all second-chance opportunities (340th nationally), and with a rating of 17.09, they're 335th in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well. South Dakota also performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 340th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 42.6% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
When playing on the road, South Dakota performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 328th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
South Dakota is typically better vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.38, South Dakota performs above their norm 92% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 41% of the time.
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, South Dakota often performs better than normal. South Dakota is more efficient than usual 89% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.32%. In their other contests, South Dakota performs better than the norm 52% of the time.
South Dakota does worse vs. clubs that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When playing squads that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 55.97%, South Dakota performs above average 50% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 83% of the time.
