ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Charlotte should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Their record this season is 17-14, and the club is ranked 187th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 180.1).
If there is a strength for Charlotte this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 138th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 102 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Charlotte is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.8% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 11th nationally in free throw percentage. Charlotte will also make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 28th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-75 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 63.6% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO. If Charlotte does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 32.8% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 18th-worst in the nation.
The defense for Charlotte, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 263rd in defensive efficiency, allowing about 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Charlotte does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 325th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 36.3% of their attempts from afar.
When playing on the road, Charlotte performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 330th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Charlotte does worse vs. clubs that are typically efficient on offense. When playing squads that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.23, Charlotte performs above average 23% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
Charlotte performs better against squads that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.27%, Charlotte is more efficient than normal 71% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Charlotte usually performs worse than average. Charlotte is more efficient than normal 31% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.87%. In all other contests, Charlotte performs better than average 80% of the time.
