ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Charlotte, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. They have a record of 16-13 and are ranked 173rd overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 174.7).
Charlotte has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #89 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Charlotte makes a point to avoid fouls and prevent opponents from getting to the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.90 vs. AO, they are currently rated 80th in the country in that category.
Unfortunately, Charlotte is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 243rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 95 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Charlotte happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked ninth from the bottom in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.19 vs. AO. Charlotte also does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 9.63 in potential points scored off of second chances (327th nationally).
Charlotte has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 314th in the country in positive momentum. Charlotte has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 339th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Charlotte usually performs better than average. Charlotte is more efficient than normal 77% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.51. In all other contests, Charlotte performs better than average 13% of the time.
Charlotte is typically worse vs. teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.89%, Charlotte performs above their norm 14% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 67% of the time.
When facing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Charlotte often performs better than normal. Charlotte is more efficient than usual 64% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.17%. In their other contests, Charlotte performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
