ANALYSIS: Charlotte presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. Their record this season is 8-21, and the club is ranked 280th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #13 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 186.6).
Charlotte is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #301 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Charlotte happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked third from the bottom in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.23 vs. AO. Charlotte also poses no threat whatsoever to grab rebounds off their own misses. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 9.57 in potential points scored off of second chances (ninth from the bottom nationally). Charlotte lastly tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.58, which ranks 335th in D1. If Charlotte does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 75.4% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #41 in Division I.
Charlotte doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #260 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Charlotte does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 314th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.6% of their attempts from afar.
Charlotte has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 343rd overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Charlotte does worse vs. clubs that effectively clean the offensive glass. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.77, Charlotte performs above average 15% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 63% of the time.
Charlotte performs worse against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 84.24, Charlotte is more efficient than normal 11% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 55% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Charlotte usually performs better than average. Charlotte is more efficient than normal 70% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.33%. In all other contests, Charlotte performs better than average 26% of the time.
