ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Morgan State isn't a very good team this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 215th overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 14-8. Of the 11 schools in the MEAC (average ranking 304.9), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Defensively, Morgan State finds itself in the lower half of our ratings. The team is ranked 245th in defensive efficiency, giving up more than 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Morgan State fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 30.24 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #338 in the country in that category. Morgan State also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.4% of all second-chance opportunities (316th nationally). If Morgan State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to hinder opponents from sinking threes. AO will convert only 30.1% of their three-point attempts, and the team ranks 17th-best in the NCAA in that category because of it.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Morgan State still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #184 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Morgan State fares worse than most teams when it comes to converting from locations close to the hoop. The team is ranked 299th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 54.2% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. If Morgan State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 28.47 vs. AO, which ranks 39th in the country.
Morgan State is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 31st in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Morgan State has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 11th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Morgan State performs better against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.27%, Morgan State is more efficient than normal 78% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 30% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Morgan State usually performs better than average. Morgan State is more efficient than normal 70% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.59%. In all other contests, Morgan State performs better than average 33% of the time.
