ANALYSIS: Morgan State is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 315th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 15-16. Of the 11 schools in the MEAC (average ranking 317.1), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.271 (which ranks third from the bottom nationally), Morgan State has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Morgan State. The team is ranked 314th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Morgan State is a lousy shooting team, incapable of converting efficiently from anyplace on the floor and ranking in the bottom-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal shooting categories. They make just 27.8% of their three-pointers (ranking seventh from the bottom nationally), 33.7% of their mid-range attempts (305th), 53.4% of their near-proximity chances (315th), and 40.0% of their total shots from the field (317th) vs. AO. Morgan State also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.15, which ranks 319th in D1. If Morgan State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to obtain and convert second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of 7.7% vs. AO, which ranks 11th in the nation.
Morgan State doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 105 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #292 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Morgan State fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 36.04 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #353 in the country in that category. Morgan State also can be weak on rebounding, giving the opposition too many chances to score off of the offensive glass. The club has a rating of 15.51 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (322nd nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 6.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 313th) as well.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Morgan State performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.00%, Morgan State is more efficient than normal 85% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 27% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Morgan State usually performs better than average. Morgan State is more efficient than normal 89% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.72%. In all other contests, Morgan State performs better than average 37% of the time.
Morgan State is typically better vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.68%, Morgan State performs above their norm 68% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 22% of the time.
