ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, McNeese likely fits the bill. Ranked 313th overall (out of 358) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 11-22. Of the eight schools in the Southland (average ranking 292.9), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Defense is not exactly a strength for McNeese this year. The team is ranked 322nd in defensive efficiency and allows more than 109 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. McNeese is one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.7% of all second-chance opportunities (335th nationally), and with a rating of 15.59, they're 318th in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well. McNeese also commits too many fouls, which leads to plentiful free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 28.67 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #319 in the country in that category.
McNeese doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #291 in the nation in offensive efficiency. McNeese has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 65.6% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #342 overall in free throw percentage. McNeese also won't enter the conversation if you're looking to list the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 330th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 29.8% of their attempts from long vs. AO. If McNeese does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 17.32 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 19th in all of college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
