ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Manhattan should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Carrying a record of 15-15, they are currently rated #264 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 11 schools in the MAAC (average ranking 198.6), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Manhattan will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #280 in defensive efficiency. Manhattan allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 41.8% of their mid-range jumpers (323rd in the nation), 65.9% of their near-proximity chances (tenth from the bottom), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (344th). Manhattan also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.6% of all second-chance opportunities (328th nationally).
Manhattan doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #241 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Manhattan is one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 326th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 80.67 vs. AO. If Manhattan does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 41.6% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 29th in the NCAA.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Manhattan does better vs. clubs that prefer the outside shot. When playing squads that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.03, Manhattan performs above average 63% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
Manhattan performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.70%, Manhattan is more efficient than normal 70% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 32% of the time.
When playing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Manhattan usually performs better than average. Manhattan is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.59. In all other contests, Manhattan performs better than average 29% of the time.
