ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Brown is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. They are ranked #214 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 15-12. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of eight) in the Ivy League (average ranking 189.5).
Brown will likely call on their defense to win a majority of their games. The team is ranked 147th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Although they have a capable defense, Brown doesn't stand out in any one particular area on that end of the court, and they fall outside the top-100 in every one of the defensive categories we take into consideration for this analysis.
The offense for Brown, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 273rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 93 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Brown is a lousy shooting team, incapable of converting efficiently from anyplace on the floor and ranking in the bottom-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal shooting categories. They make just 30.7% of their three-pointers (ranking 309th nationally), 30.4% of their mid-range attempts (fourth from the bottom), 53.8% of their near-proximity chances (308th), and 38.9% of their total shots from the field (340th) vs. AO. If Brown does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 16.20 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 38th in all of college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Brown performs better against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 9.53, Brown is more efficient than normal 90% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 25% of the time.
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Brown usually performs worse than average. Brown is more efficient than normal 21% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.54%. In all other contests, Brown performs better than average 83% of the time.
Brown is typically worse vs. teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. Against foes that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 83.12, Brown performs above their norm 27% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 82% of the time.
