ANALYSIS: Arizona is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. They are ranked #28 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 27-8. Of the 12 schools in the Pac-12 (average ranking 95.3), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Arizona is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated 13th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 115 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Arizona is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 44.8% of their mid-range jumpers (third in the nation), 71.7% of their near-proximity chances (first), and 51.3% of their total shots from the field (second) vs. AO. Arizona also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 10.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 12th nationally).
Arizona is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 96th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Arizona does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.90 vs. AO, they are currently rated 34th in the country in that category. Arizona has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 43rd in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 34.0% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (33.7%) will be from mid-range.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, Arizona often performs worse than normal. Arizona is more efficient than usual 10% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.61%. In their other contests, Arizona performs better than the norm 56% of the time.
Arizona does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.16%, Arizona performs above average 29% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
Arizona performs better against squads that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.25%, Arizona is more efficient than normal 73% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 29% of the time.
