ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Lamar is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Ranked 228th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 17-15. Of the 13 schools in the Southland (average ranking 253.4), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Lamar is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #256 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 94 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Lamar is one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.6% of all second-chance opportunities (316th nationally).
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Lamar still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #193 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Although their defense isn't the greatest, Lamar doesn't stand out as being especially horrible in any one particular area on that end of the court, and they fall outside the bottom-100 in every one of the defensive categories we take into consideration for this analysis. If Lamar does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 14.96 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 17th-best in college basketball.
Lamar has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked 21st in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Lamar usually performs worse than average. Lamar is more efficient than normal 30% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.57. In all other contests, Lamar performs better than average 78% of the time.
Lamar is typically better vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.61, Lamar performs above their norm 63% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 23% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter, Lamar often performs worse than normal. Lamar is more efficient than usual 32% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.99. In their other contests, Lamar performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
