ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Pittsburgh, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. Carrying a record of 10-12, they are currently rated #92 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 76.8), they're currently ranked as our #12 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Pittsburgh this year is offense. The team is ranked 79th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 105 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Pittsburgh does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.17 vs. AO, they are ranked fourth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 66.0% of their attempts. Pittsburgh will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 13th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 59.0% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category.
Pittsburgh plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 116th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 97 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Pittsburgh is a solid rebounding team that will deny the opposition chances to score off of offensive rebounds. They have a rating of 10.43 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 35th in the country).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Pittsburgh is typically worse vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.46, Pittsburgh performs above their norm 29% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 88% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Pittsburgh often performs better than normal. Pittsburgh is more efficient than usual 71% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 3.96%. In their other contests, Pittsburgh performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Pittsburgh does better vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.69%, Pittsburgh performs above average 78% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
