ANALYSIS: Kansas is among the very best of the best in NCAA hoops this year. They have a record of 34-6 and are ranked second overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 10) in the Big 12 (average ranking 27.4). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.775 (the highest in the country), Kansas has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Kansas is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated sixth in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 118 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Kansas is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They convert 38.3% of their three-pointers (fifth in the nation), 65.3% of their near-proximity attempts (27th), and 49.5% of their total shots from the field (fifth) vs. AO. Kansas also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 13th nationally). Kansas lastly allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.32, which ranks #22 in the country.
Kansas plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 11th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Kansas will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 28.6% of their three-pointers (12th in the nation), 31.8% of their mid-range shots (eighth), 53.4% of their near-proximity attempts (31st), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (seventh). Kansas also makes a point to avoid fouls and prevent opponents from getting to the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.35 vs. AO, they are currently rated 75th in the country in that category.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Kansas is typically better vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.07, Kansas performs above their norm 85% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 30% of the time.
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, Kansas often performs worse than normal. Kansas is more efficient than usual 17% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.47%. In their other contests, Kansas performs better than the norm 61% of the time.
Kansas does better vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.38, Kansas performs above average 64% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
