ANALYSIS: Kansas is among the very best of the best in NCAA hoops this year. They have a record of 31-5 and are ranked fifth overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 10) in the Big 12 (average ranking 27.4). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.792 (the fourth-highest in the country), Kansas has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Kansas is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated fifth in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 120 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Kansas is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They convert 40.6% of their three-pointers (eighth in the nation), 68.3% of their near-proximity attempts (tenth), and 50.5% of their total shots from the field (fourth) vs. AO. Kansas also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.53 vs. AO, they are ranked 20th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 69.0%.
Kansas plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 22nd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Kansas is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.44 vs. AO, they are currently rated 14th in the country in that category. Kansas also thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 16th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.64.
Kansas is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 21st in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Kansas is typically worse vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 28.53, Kansas performs above their norm 30% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 77% of the time.
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Kansas often performs better than normal. Kansas is more efficient than usual 60% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 53.09%. In their other contests, Kansas performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
