ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Iowa, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. They are ranked #99 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 14-19. They are also ranked by this site as the #12 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 55.0).
Iowa has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #29 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 113 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 10.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked seventh nationally), and with a rating of 19.65, they're 16th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Iowa is also an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 41.4% of their mid-range jumpers (32nd in the nation), 67.3% of their near-proximity chances (16th), and 48.9% of their total shots from the field (22nd) vs. AO. If Iowa does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 12.90 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 40th-worst in the college game.
Unfortunately, Iowa is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 227th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Iowa does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 318th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.6% of their attempts from afar. If Iowa does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.27 vs. AO, which ranks 42nd-best in the country.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Iowa often performs better than normal. Iowa is more efficient than usual 83% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.70%. In their other contests, Iowa performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Iowa does better vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.89%, Iowa performs above average 83% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
