ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Iowa is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Carrying a record of 17-16, they are currently rated #70 overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #15 team (out of 18) in the Big Ten (average ranking 42.5).
Iowa succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 27th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 120 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Iowa is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. They make 39.1% of their three-pointers (ninth in the nation), 42.7% of their mid-range jumpers (27th), 66.2% of their near-proximity chances (13th), and 49.9% of their total shots from the field (eighth) vs. AO. Iowa also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 10.12, which ranks #44 in the country.
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, Iowa still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 161st nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa makes a point to avoid fouls and prevent opponents from getting to the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 23.56 vs. AO, they are currently rated 53rd in the country in that category. If Iowa does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's issues trying to stop opponents from obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a defensive second-chance conversion percentage of 7.2% vs. AO, which ranks 45th-worst in the nation.
When playing on the road, Iowa performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 339th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Iowa performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 119.52, Iowa never performs above average. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 65% of the time.
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Iowa usually performs better than average. Iowa is more efficient than normal 85% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.45%. In all other contests, Iowa performs better than average 20% of the time.
Iowa is typically worse vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.68%, Iowa performs above their norm 26% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 90% of the time.
