ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Illinois State should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. They have a record of 17-16 and are ranked 196th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 10) in the MVC (average ranking 177.2).
Based on their performances this year, Illinois State will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 104 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #169 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Although they have a capable defense, Illinois State doesn't stand out in any one particular area on that end of the court, and they fall outside the top-100 in every one of the defensive categories we take into consideration for this analysis. If Illinois State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.51 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks eighth-worst in the college game.
Illinois State is not quite as good on the offensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 212th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Despite their struggles on offense, Illinois State doesn't really stand out as being terrible in any one particular area on that end of the floor. In fact, they aren't even in the bottom-100 in any of the offensive categories we consider for this analysis.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

Illinois State is more efficient than usual 91% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.09%. In their other contests, Illinois State performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
Illinois State does better vs. clubs that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.76%, Illinois State performs above average 73% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
