ANALYSIS: Hampton is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. They have a record of 9-19 and are ranked 330th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #11 team (out of 12) in the Big South (average ranking 245.6).
Hampton has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank ninth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Hampton struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 29.7% of their three-pointers (332nd in the nation), 49.3% of their near-proximity attempts (fifth from the bottom), and 38.5% of their total shots from the field (348th) vs. AO. If Hampton does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's care for the ball. The squad has a rating of 8.89 in potential points allowed off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 44th in the college game.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, Hampton isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #235 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Hampton gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 18.70 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (second from the bottom nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 6.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 332nd) as well. Hampton is also extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #344 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.03 vs. AO. Hampton lastly fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 30.47 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #340 in the country in that category.
Hampton has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #31 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Hampton does worse vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.40%, Hampton performs above average 22% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
Hampton performs worse against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 40.34%, Hampton is more efficient than normal 44% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 88% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Hampton usually performs worse than average. Hampton is more efficient than normal 39% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.85%. In all other contests, Hampton performs better than average 77% of the time.
