ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Hampton likely fits the bill. Haslametrics has them ranked 310th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 15-19. Of the 11 schools in the Big South (average ranking 282.5), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Hampton this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 167th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 99 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hampton loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked 22nd in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those mid-range shots goes, the team shoots a mediocre 38.2% vs. AO. Hampton also does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 29.05 vs. AO, they are ranked 39th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 70.4%.
Unfortunately, Hampton is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked tenth from the bottom in defensive efficiency, allowing about 112 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hampton is one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.7% of all second-chance opportunities (second from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 17.69, they're sixth from the bottom in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well. Hampton also allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 36.0% of their three-pointers (304th in the nation), 67.2% of their near-proximity attempts (343rd), and 47.3% of their total shots from the field (324th).
Hampton has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked ninth in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Hampton is typically worse vs. teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. Against foes that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 78.92, Hampton performs above their norm 35% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 73% of the time.
