ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, FIU is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Haslametrics has them ranked 147th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 19-13. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 174.7).
FIU will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 139th in offensive efficiency and scores more than 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. FIU does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 13th nationally), and with a rating of 16.16, they're 40th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. FIU will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 16th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 58.8% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. If FIU does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 65.0% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 26th-worst in Division I.
FIU is not quite as good on the defensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 177th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. FIU gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 17.96 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (fourth from the bottom nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 7.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 335th) as well. If FIU does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 15.65 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks eighth-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, FIU usually performs better than average. FIU is more efficient than normal 77% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.89%. In all other contests, FIU performs better than average 38% of the time.
FIU is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.71%, FIU performs above their norm 30% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 68% of the time.
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, FIU often performs worse than normal. FIU is more efficient than usual 30% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.93. In their other contests, FIU performs better than the norm 68% of the time.
