ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, E. Michigan is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Haslametrics has them ranked 201st overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 16-16. They are also ranked by this site as the #9 team (out of 12) in the MAC (average ranking 168.3).
The primary strength for E. Michigan is defense. The team is ranked 99th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 96 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. E. Michigan will look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 61st in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.18. E. Michigan has also been fairly decent in preventing teams from draining shots from between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 63rd in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 34.2% of their attempts from that distance.
Unfortunately, E. Michigan is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 298th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 92 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. E. Michigan is one of the least accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They are ranked eighth from the bottom in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 28.0% of their attempts from long vs. AO. E. Michigan also has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 62.5% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #344 overall in free throw percentage. E. Michigan lastly happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked tenth from the bottom in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.27 vs. AO. If E. Michigan does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 30.30 vs. AO, which ranks 22nd in the country.
E. Michigan has been playing some of their worst basketball of the season as of late, and they're presently ranked 335th in positive momentum because of it. E. Michigan has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 340th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
E. Michigan performs better against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 11.69, E. Michigan is more efficient than normal 75% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 35% of the time.
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, E. Michigan usually performs better than average. E. Michigan is more efficient than normal 64% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.55%. In all other contests, E. Michigan performs better than average 29% of the time.
E. Michigan is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.02%, E. Michigan performs above their norm 58% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 22% of the time.
