ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Drexel is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Haslametrics has them ranked 206th overall (out of 363) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 17-15. Of the 13 schools in the Colonial (average ranking 250.7), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Drexel will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and favoring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 17th-slowest pace in D1), they currently occupy the #139 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Drexel is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.62 vs. AO, they are currently rated 20th in the country in that category. Drexel has also been fairly decent in preventing teams from draining shots from between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 65th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 35.5% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (36.7%) will be from mid-range. If Drexel does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.23 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 40th-worst in college basketball.
The offense for Drexel, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 266th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Drexel won't enter the conversation if you're looking to list the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 336th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 30.8% of their attempts from long vs. AO. Drexel is also not one of the better teams when it comes to sinking foul shots. Converting just 66.5% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #329 overall in free throw percentage.
Drexel has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked last overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Drexel performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 316th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Drexel performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.31%, Drexel is more efficient than normal 14% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 65% of the time.
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Drexel usually performs better than average. Drexel is more efficient than normal 57% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.89. In all other contests, Drexel performs better than average 10% of the time.
Drexel is typically better vs. teams that do not defend well on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.19%, Drexel performs above their norm 55% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 11% of the time.
