ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Drexel should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Ranked 193rd overall (out of 364) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 18-15. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 14) in the CAA (average ranking 225.9).
Offensively, Drexel finds itself in the lower half of the rankings. The team is rated 212th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 106 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Drexel does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 21.01 vs. AO, they are tenth from the bottom in the overall rankings for that category. Drexel also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 15.08, which ranks 339th in D1. If Drexel does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 41.2% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 46th in the NCAA.
Drexel doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 109 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #183 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Drexel is extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #358 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.61 vs. AO. Drexel also allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 352nd in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 92.25 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Drexel performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.03%, Drexel is more efficient than normal 90% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 32% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Drexel usually performs better than average. Drexel is more efficient than normal 71% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 111.59. In all other contests, Drexel performs better than average 27% of the time.
Drexel is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 46.36%, Drexel performs above their norm 80% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 36% of the time.
