ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Detroit Mercy, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. They have a record of 12-10 and are ranked 154th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 12) in the Horizon League (average ranking 234.0).
Detroit Mercy has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #73 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Detroit Mercy is one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked seventh nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 39.3% of their attempts from there vs. AO. And they'll definitely take every opportunity to chuck it from long. About 45.0% of the team's shots vs. AO are three-pointers, the 17th-highest percentage in the nation. Detroit Mercy is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 79.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked eighth nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 22.43 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line. If Detroit Mercy does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 7.23 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks second-worst in college hoops.
Unfortunately, Detroit Mercy is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 292nd in defensive efficiency, allowing about 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Detroit Mercy does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 313th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 36.8% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (42.6%) will be from long-distance. Detroit Mercy also hasn't done terribly well defending the mid-range jumper. The squad is ranked 307th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 42.4% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Thankfully, AO will take nowhere near as many mid-range shots vs. Detroit Mercy as they typically would, as only 24.2% of their field goal attempts will come from in-between locations. If Detroit Mercy does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.32 vs. AO, which ranks 16th-best in the country.
Detroit Mercy is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 26th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Detroit Mercy performs better against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.38%, Detroit Mercy is more efficient than normal 63% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 29% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Detroit Mercy usually performs worse than average. Detroit Mercy is more efficient than normal 29% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.63%. In all other contests, Detroit Mercy performs better than average 63% of the time.
