ANALYSIS: Dayton has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Ranked 38th overall (out of 362) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 25-8. Of the 15 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 123.4), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Dayton succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 32nd in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 115 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Dayton is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They convert 40.0% of their three-pointers (third in the nation), 65.7% of their near-proximity attempts (14th), and 48.2% of their total shots from the field (26th) vs. AO. Dayton will also make a concerted effort to fire off quite a few three-pointers each game. The team ranks 42nd in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts.
Dayton plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 54th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Dayton is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 18.62 vs. AO, they are currently rated third in the country in that category. Dayton also does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 19th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.7% of their attempts from afar. If Dayton does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 89.90 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 22nd-worst in college basketball.
Dayton has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 318th in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Dayton performs worse against squads that effectively clean the offensive glass. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.13, Dayton is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 80% of the time.
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Dayton usually performs worse than average. Dayton is more efficient than normal 26% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.18. In all other contests, Dayton performs better than average 71% of the time.
Dayton is typically worse vs. teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.57%, Dayton performs above their norm 28% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 67% of the time.
