ANALYSIS: Dayton is among the very best of the best in NCAA hoops this year. Ranked ninth overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 29-2. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 136.6), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Dayton will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 114 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the squad is rated #7 in offensive efficiency. Dayton is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. They make 37.0% of their three-pointers (25th in the nation), 42.6% of their mid-range jumpers (tenth), 72.9% of their near-proximity chances (first), and 51.7% of their total shots from the field (first) vs. AO. Dayton also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.08, which ranks #32 in the country. If Dayton does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.34 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 19th-worst in college hoops.
Dayton plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 34th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Dayton has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 26th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.6% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (35.9%) will be from mid-range. Dayton has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #56 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.8% of their total attempts from the floor.
Dayton is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 11th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Dayton performs worse against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.11, Dayton is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 89% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Dayton usually performs worse than average. Dayton is more efficient than normal 26% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.93. In all other contests, Dayton performs better than average 75% of the time.
Dayton is typically worse vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.07, Dayton performs above their norm 24% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 71% of the time.
