ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Davidson, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. They have a record of 20-13 and are ranked 106th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 116.4), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Davidson this year is offense. The team is ranked 36th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 111 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Davidson is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 76.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 17th nationally in free throw percentage. Davidson also lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 21st in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 35.6% from beyond the arc vs. AO. Davidson is lastly superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 22nd nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 40.8% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO.
Unfortunately, Davidson is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 211th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Davidson performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked fifth from the bottom nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 42.9% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Davidson is typically better vs. teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.90%, Davidson performs above their norm 64% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 10% of the time.
When facing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Davidson often performs better than normal. Davidson is more efficient than usual 67% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.43. In their other contests, Davidson performs better than the norm 21% of the time.
Davidson does better vs. clubs that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.11, Davidson performs above average 59% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
