ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Oregon State is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. They have a record of 3-28 and are ranked 242nd overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 94.5).
Oregon State will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 143rd in offensive efficiency and scores more than 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oregon State does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 12th nationally). Oregon State also favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 38th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-75 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 40.0% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO.
Unfortunately, Oregon State is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 324th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 110 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Oregon State has done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 326th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 63.7% of their attempts from close-up.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Oregon State is typically worse vs. teams that effectively clean the offensive glass. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.13, Oregon State performs above their norm 38% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 90% of the time.
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, Oregon State often performs better than normal. Oregon State is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.60. In their other contests, Oregon State performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
Oregon State does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.14%, Oregon State performs above average 41% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 89% of the time.
