ANALYSIS: Chicago State is one of the absolute worst teams in Division I basketball this year. They are ranked #346 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 3-29. Of the eight schools in the WAC (average ranking 203.6), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Chicago State has one of the most inept defenses in the NCAA. Allowing about 116 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they're ranked way down at #347 in defensive efficiency. Chicago State allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 39.7% of their three-pointers (341st in the nation), 66.1% of their near-proximity attempts (327th), and 50.4% of their total shots from the field (sixth from the bottom). Chicago State is also one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 9.7% of all second-chance opportunities (sixth from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 17.83, they're 334th in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well.
Chicago State doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 91 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #333 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Chicago State is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 330th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 32.1% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. Exacerbating the situation, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting only 41.2% of all their attempts from the floor vs. AO. Chicago State also fares worse than most teams when it comes to converting from locations close to the hoop. The team is ranked 301st in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 55.0% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. If Chicago State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to obtain and convert second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of 9.2% vs. AO, which ranks 25th in the nation.
Chicago State has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked fifth in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Chicago State is typically better vs. teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively. Against foes that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 98.82, Chicago State performs above their norm 82% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 39% of the time.
When facing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Chicago State often performs better than normal. Chicago State is more efficient than usual 91% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.50%. In their other contests, Chicago State performs better than the norm 47% of the time.
Chicago State does worse vs. clubs that shoot the ball well from the field. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.08%, Chicago State performs above average 50% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 90% of the time.
