ANALYSIS: A borderline top-25 caliber team, Butler will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. They have a record of 25-9 and are ranked 27th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 10) in the Big East (average ranking 58.1). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.763 (which ranks 15th nationally), Butler is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Butler is one of the very most competent offensive teams in the country. Ranked 18th in offensive efficiency, they'll rack up more than 115 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Butler is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. While hitting from inside is their primary strength (68.7% from near-proximity vs. AO, seventh in the country), the team also converts 38.4% of their three-pointers (38th), 41.8% of their mid-range jumpers (tenth), and 49.0% of their total shots from the field (20th) vs. AO. Butler also allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.43, which ranks #22 in the country. If Butler does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.38 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks ninth-worst in college hoops.
Butler plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 53rd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Butler does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 11.38 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked ninth in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 5.1% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 36th) as well. Butler also does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 17th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.1% of their attempts from afar.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Butler usually performs better than average. Butler is more efficient than normal 80% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.67%. In all other contests, Butler performs better than average 46% of the time.
Butler is typically worse vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.71, Butler performs above their norm 46% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 80% of the time.
