ANALYSIS: Buffalo has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 88th overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 16-9. Of the 12 schools in the MAC (average ranking 197.1), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
Demonstrating a preference for a very up-tempo style of play (the 22nd-fastest pace in D1), Buffalo will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 99th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Buffalo does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank sixth in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 28.9% of their attempts from afar. For this reason, AO takes nowhere near as many threes as they typically would -- just 31.1% of AO's field goal attempts will be from downtown. Buffalo also does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 37th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.36. If Buffalo does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 85.08 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 50th-worst in college basketball.
Buffalo plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 106th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Buffalo appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 22.48 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked first in the NCAA), and they convert 9.8% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked second) as well. Buffalo will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is second in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 57.9% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. If Buffalo does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 30.7% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks tenth-worst in the nation.
Buffalo is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 45th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Buffalo is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.80, Buffalo performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 17% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Buffalo often performs worse than normal. Buffalo is more efficient than usual 11% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.40. In their other contests, Buffalo performs better than the norm 60% of the time.
Buffalo does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.40%, Buffalo performs above average 60% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 11% of the time.
