ANALYSIS: Despite their unexceptional win percentage, Oklahoma State should be regarded as one of the better teams in college hoops. They have a record of 15-15 and are ranked 29th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 10) in the Big 12 (average ranking 27.4). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.733 (the seventh-highest in the country), Oklahoma State has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Oklahoma State has been magnificent on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated fourth in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 87 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oklahoma State will do a number on many an opponent's shooting percentage, as the team ranks in the top-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 31.3% of their mid-range jumpers (fifth in the nation), 46.7% of their near-proximity chances (first), and 36.6% of their total shots from the field (second). Oklahoma State also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 23rd in the NCAA). Oklahoma State lastly thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 25th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.56.
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, Oklahoma State still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 127th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oklahoma State will make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 50th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 61.3% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. Oklahoma State is also fairly competent protecting the ball on offense, which minimizes opportunities for the opponent to score quickly off of steals. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.44, which ranks #69 in the country. If Oklahoma State does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 66.4% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 30th-worst in Division I.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
