ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Binghamton likely fits the bill. Ranked 294th overall (out of 358) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 12-17. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 10) in the America East (average ranking 261.3). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.267 (which ranks 341st in the nation), Binghamton has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Binghamton. The team is ranked 307th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Binghamton has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 12.97, which ranks 328th in D1. Binghamton also struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 21.07 vs. AO, they are 320th in the overall rankings for that category.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Binghamton still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #233 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Binghamton has done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 321st nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 41.7% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Making matters worse, AO will take advantage of that weakness and put up mid-range shots in abundance. Of AO's total field goals, a huge portion of them (35.1%) will be from those in-between locations.
Binghamton is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 35th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. On the road, Binghamton performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 29th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Binghamton performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.16%, Binghamton is more efficient than normal 63% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 13% of the time.
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Binghamton usually performs better than average. Binghamton is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.31. In all other contests, Binghamton performs better than average 25% of the time.
Binghamton is typically worse vs. teams that prefer the outside shot. Against foes that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.04, Binghamton performs above their norm 37% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
